Understanding ammunition calibers is fundamental to responsible firearm ownership. A caliber refers to the internal diameter of a firearm's barrel and, by extension, the diameter of the projectile it fires. Calibers are expressed in either imperial measurements (inches) or metric measurements (millimeters). For example, .45 ACP refers to a bullet diameter of approximately 0.452 inches, while 9mm Luger refers to a 9-millimeter bullet diameter. Common handgun calibers include .22 LR (ideal for training and plinking due to minimal recoil and low cost), .380 ACP (a popular choice for small concealed carry pistols), 9mm Luger (the most widely used defensive handgun caliber worldwide), .40 S&W (offering a balance between 9mm and .45 ACP), and .45 ACP (a large, slow-moving bullet favored for its stopping power). For rifles, popular calibers include .223 Remington/5.56 NATO (the standard AR-15 caliber), .308 Winchester/7.62 NATO (a versatile hunting and long-range caliber), .30-06 Springfield (a classic American hunting cartridge), and 6.5 Creedmoor (a modern long-range precision caliber). Shotgun ammunition is categorized by gauge rather than caliber, with 12 gauge being the most popular, followed by 20 gauge. Each caliber has distinct characteristics that make it suitable for specific applications, from target shooting to self-defense to hunting.

Bullet Types: FMJ, Hollow Point, and Soft Point

The type of bullet you choose significantly impacts performance. Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) rounds feature a soft lead core enclosed in a harder metal shell, typically copper or a copper alloy. FMJ ammunition is the standard choice for range practice and training because it is relatively inexpensive, feeds reliably in semi-automatic firearms, and produces consistent accuracy. However, FMJ rounds tend to pass through soft targets without expanding, which makes them less effective for self-defense and potentially dangerous due to over-penetration. Hollow Point (HP) ammunition features a cavity in the tip of the bullet designed to cause the bullet to expand upon impact with soft tissue. This expansion creates a larger wound channel and transfers more energy to the target, making hollow points the preferred choice for self-defense and law enforcement use. Quality defensive hollow point ammunition from manufacturers like Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot, and Hornady Critical Defense is engineered to expand reliably across a range of conditions while penetrating to an effective depth. Soft Point (SP) ammunition uses an exposed lead tip with a partial metal jacket, providing controlled expansion that falls between FMJ and HP performance. Soft points are popular for hunting because they offer good expansion and weight retention, making them effective on game animals. Other specialty bullet types include frangible rounds (designed to break apart on impact with hard surfaces, making them ideal for close-range training), tracer rounds, and bonded bullets that prevent core-jacket separation for deep penetration on large game.

Brass vs. Steel Casings and Reloading Basics

Ammunition casings are primarily made from brass or steel, and each material has distinct advantages. Brass-cased ammunition is the gold standard for most shooters. Brass is softer and more malleable than steel, which means it creates a better seal in the chamber, extracts more reliably, and causes less wear on your firearm's extractor and chamber. Brass casings can also be reloaded multiple times, making them economically attractive for high-volume shooters. Steel-cased ammunition, produced primarily by manufacturers like Tula, Wolf, and Barnaul, is significantly cheaper than brass-cased alternatives. However, steel is harder on extractors and chambers, may not feed as reliably in some firearms, and is generally not reloadable. Many indoor ranges prohibit steel-cased ammunition due to the bi-metal bullets that often accompany them, which can damage backstops. For budget-conscious shooters who are not interested in reloading, steel-cased ammunition offers substantial savings for high-volume practice. For those who shoot frequently, reloading spent brass casings can reduce ammunition costs by 40 to 60 percent. Getting started with reloading requires an initial investment in a reloading press, dies, powder measure, scale, and components (brass, primers, powder, and bullets). A basic single-stage reloading setup costs between $300 and $500, while progressive presses capable of higher output run from $500 to $1,500 or more. Reloading also offers the ability to customize loads for specific firearms and applications, fine-tuning accuracy beyond what factory ammunition can achieve.

Storage Tips and Bulk Buying Strategies

Proper ammunition storage ensures reliability and longevity. Modern ammunition, when stored correctly, can remain viable for decades. The key enemies of ammunition are moisture, extreme temperatures, and chemical exposure. Store your ammunition in a cool, dry location with consistent temperatures, ideally between 55 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Military surplus ammo cans with rubber gaskets provide excellent moisture protection and are widely available at affordable prices. Adding desiccant packets inside your storage containers provides additional moisture control. Avoid storing ammunition in attics, garages, or basements where temperature fluctuations and humidity are common. Keep ammunition in its original packaging when possible, as this protects it from physical damage and makes it easy to identify caliber, bullet type, and lot numbers. For long-term storage, consider vacuum-sealing cases of ammunition for maximum moisture protection. Bulk buying is one of the most effective strategies for saving money on ammunition. Purchasing in case quantities (typically 500 or 1,000 rounds) can save 15 to 30 percent compared to buying individual boxes. Many online retailers offer free shipping on case quantities, further increasing savings. Set price alerts on popular ammunition tracking websites to be notified when prices drop. Building a reserve of practice and defensive ammunition during periods of normal supply and pricing protects you from the price spikes and shortages that periodically affect the ammunition market.
