Pistol Emoji

The Pistol Emoji Story

The pistol emoji has had a fascinating journey in the digital world. Originally depicted as a realistic revolver or semi-automatic pistol across all major platforms, it has undergone significant changes that reflect broader cultural conversations about firearms representation in digital communication.

History of the Change

In 2016, Apple replaced the realistic pistol emoji with a green water gun on iOS devices. Over the following years, Google, Samsung, Microsoft, Twitter, and other major platforms followed suit, each replacing their realistic firearm depictions with toy water guns or similarly stylized alternatives.

The Unicode Consortium, which standardizes emoji characters, still defines the character as "PISTOL" (U+1F52B), but leaves visual representation up to individual platform vendors.
